Injuries and violence can dramatically impact a person's ability to lead an active, fulfilling life.
From humble beginnings of tracking injuries in schools, the Utah Department of Health Violence and Injury Prevention Program has worked tirelessly for more than 30 years to eliminate needless suffering and death from injuries and violence.
Injuries are the leading cause of death for Utahans ages 1 through 54.
Every day in Utah, five people die from injury or violence, 34 are hospitalized due to injury or violence, and 420 are treated in an emergency room due to injury or violence.
In 2013, the top five injury-related deaths in Utah were suicides, poisonings (excludes suicides), unintentional falls, motor vehicle crashes, and accidental suffocation.
Our mission is to be "a trusted and comprehensive resource for data and technical assistance related to violence and injury. With this information, we help promote partnerships and programs to prevent injuries and improve public health."
